I praise You, Goddess Dhumavati! The One whose form is pralaya, dissolution, the One who creates and produces pralaya, and who walks in pralaya. She appears at the end of times when even Shiva himself disappears. Because she is alone, she appears as a widow, and in that form represents the power of time, beyond time and space, beyond name and form, beyond human categories, alone and indivisible as the great dissolution. She reveals the nature of ultimate knowledge, which is formless and knows no division into good and bad, pure and impure, auspicious and inauspicious. She manifests herself in the form of smoke, and like smoke she spreads wherever she wishes.

Mahavidyas represent transcendental knowledge and powers. The ten Mahavidyas are the ten degrees of transcendental cognition. They are the sources of all that is to be known. Mahadevi, the great Goddess, also called Maya, causes captivity, leads astray in ignorance, this is called avidya. But it is also liberating. The ten Mahavidyas are the ten forms in which the Goddess brings enlightenment and liberating knowledge called vidya.
